Sheffield Place opened its doors in February 1991 as a community response to the growing population of homeless mothers and their children in the Kansas City area. Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City collaborated to submit an application to the Department of Housing and Urban Development that was approved in June 1989. Sheffield Place was incorporated in September 1989 and became the first area agency to receive a Supportive Housing Grant.
More than 480 families have been served since first opening our doors in 1991. Initial program activities included shelter and case management. A staff of two operated Sheffield Place during its first two years of operation. Since then we have added children's services, therapeutic services, and enhanced adult educational and independent living services. A staff of ten now serves a variety of program and operational functions. These professional services combined with the commitment of the families we serve have resulted in a tremendous record of success. Sheffield Place has documented a 90% success rate with its' graduates and a 65% success rates with its non-graduates. Success is defined as:
- Achieve greater self-determination
- Increase education and employment skills
- Obtain and retain permanent housing
Sheffield Place is proud of its history and even more excited about its future. |
